Why is information literacy important?

According to the American Library Association, "Information Literacy is the set of skills needed to find, retrieve, analyze, and use information." We are inundated with information from all kinds of sources: How do we find reliable information in an efficient way? How can we use the information we have to build on our skills and knowledge? How can we use and disseminate the information in an ethical way?
